Heavy rainfall that began on Friday midnight and continued until Sunday night has flooded several areas of Khulna city, leaving hundreds of families affected. Roads, drains, homes and educational institutions in low-lying areas remain underwater, disrupting daily life and causing damage to household belongings.

Low-Lying Areas Submerged

Several areas under Daulatpur and Khanjahan Ali police stations were inundated following the prolonged rainfall. Floodwater entered many homes, damaging furniture and kitchen items and creating hardship for residents.

Locals said several areas under Khanjahan Ali Police Station, including parts of Wards 4, 7 and 9 of Jogipol, Jabdipur, Teligati, Dhalipara, Khanabari, Bil Dakatia village and the Government Laboratory High School intersection, have been severely affected.

Several areas under Daulatpur Police Station, including Pabla, Uttar Banikpara and Maheshwarpasha Paschimpara, have also been flooded. Low-lying areas under Khalishpur Police Station, including Bastuhara, Mujgunni and Goalkhali, have faced similar problems.

Educational Institutions Hit by Waterlogging

The flooding has affected several educational institutions across the city. These include Government Teachers Training College, Higher Secondary Teacher Training Institute, Government Laboratory High School, Women’s Technical Training Centre, Kharabari Girls High School, Shaheed Zia Adarsha Mahavidyalaya, Khanjahan Ali Technical and BM College, Teligati Secondary School, Udayan Government Primary School, Pratibha Pre-Cadet School, Mizan Academy and Alhera Pre-Cadet Madrasa.

Parts of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), including its main gate, playground and residential halls, have also been inundated. Many classrooms and institutional buildings have been affected.

Around 250 Houses Submerged

Khulna Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat said around 250 houses were submerged due to the continuous rainfall.

“Regular activities at educational institutions and other organisations have been disrupted due to waterlogging,” she said.

Residents Describe Damage

Masud Al Hasan, a resident of Pabla Ward No. 6, said most parts of the ward had been submerged.

“Many houses have been flooded. Valuable furniture has been damaged. My own house has been flooded up to knee level, and the ceiling fan has also been damaged,” he said.

He added that roads from Kabir Battala to Karikar Para, Sabuj Sangha Field and the council office area were under water.

Md Taiyebur Rahman Liton, a resident of Khanabari, said the area faced waterlogging every year due to poor drainage.

“Roads, drains and houses in Khanabari, Banikpara, Teligati and Maheshwarpasha Paschimpara remain submerged every year. Water gradually moves away and accumulates in the fields of Laboratory High School and TTC College, affecting these institutions the most,” he said.

He said residents continued to suffer due to the lack of an effective drainage system.

Relief Distributed to Affected Families

Meanwhile, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdulla Harun and Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat distributed relief materials and dry food among flood-affected people on Sunday.

Authorities provided relief support to around 500 affected families.
