 Chief Whip Says No Scope to Rewrite Constitution

Chief Whip of the National Parliament Md. Nurul Islam has stated that the new amendment committee will only make recommendations. He clarified that there is no chance to fully rewrite the constitution. Furthermore, he shared this update during a press briefing at the National Parliament on Monday, July 13.

During the briefing, he discussed the recent actions of the opposition party. Earlier that day, the opposition walked out of the parliament. Specifically, this protest happened when officials proposed a 17-member constitution amendment committee.

Regarding this event, the Chief Whip said, “Walkout is a tradition of the opposition party, they can do it. But we think that what they did today, they did without understanding. I believe they will understand. We will all amend the constitution together.”

Open Door for Discussion

Md. Nurul Islam also invited the opposition members to join the talks. He said, “I want to tell the opposition party, the door is always open for them to discuss. Their names will be added to the constitution amendment committee as soon as they provide them.”

Additionally, he noted that the government has not ignored the recent referendum verdict. Speaking on this matter, he said, “There is nothing to protest. We campaigned against fascism together. Surely the opposition party will not do anything so that anyone else takes advantage.”

Opposition Plans to Continue Movement

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman shared a different view. He spoke at a press conference right after the parliament walkout. During his speech, he announced plans to continue their movement on the streets and inside the parliament. Ultimately, he vowed to maintain this protest until the government fully implements the referendum’s verdict.

He stated that this active movement will happen both on the city streets and inside the parliament. Ultimately, the opposition leader vowed to maintain these protests. He declared they will not stop until the government fully implements the exact verdict of the recent referendum.
