Mild Earthquake Jolts Dhaka
A mild earthquake jolted the capital city of Dhaka and various other parts of Bangladesh on Monday night, sparking panic among residents across the region.
The tremor, which lasted for several seconds, was felt at approximately 9:28 PM local time. Farzana Yasmin, an assistant meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), confirmed the occurrence of the tremor to the media. However, the BMD and international seismological agencies are yet to officially confirm the exact magnitude, depth, and epicenter of the quake.
The sudden shaking caused widespread alarm across the densely populated capital. Witnesses reported that high-rise buildings swayed noticeably, prompting frightened citizens to rush out of their homes, offices, and commercial establishments to seek safety in open streets and fields.
Social media platforms were quickly flooded with posts from users across the country, indicating that the tremors were not confined to the capital. Reports suggest the quake was felt in multiple districts, though the intensity of the shaking varied by region.
Despite the widespread panic, there have been no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or significant structural damage from the capital or elsewhere in the country. Emergency services and law enforcement agencies remain on alert, and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Bangladesh sits near the tectonically active boundary of the Indian and Eurasian plates, making the country geographically vulnerable to seismic activity. Geologists and urban planners have consistently stressed the importance of strict building codes and public awareness—particularly in rapidly expanding urban centers like Dhaka—to mitigate the risks associated with larger earthquakes in the future.
