Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today urged every citizen and family to spend at least half an hour in two days a week for cleaning their homes and surroundings to prevent the breeding of dengue mosquitoes.
“Let us all, as individuals and families, spend at least half an hour to an hour in every two days a week for cleaning our homes, surroundings and the places we pass through every day where dengue mosquitoes can breed,” he said in a Facebook message.
The Prime Minister said eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, particularly stagnant water and accumulated waste is the most effective way to prevent dengue.
“Dengue mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, whether in corners of our homes or at different places along roads and public spaces. If we can clear these breeding grounds, we will be far more successful in preventing dengue,” he said.
Tarique Rahman said people of different ages are falling sick and dying from dengue, adding that collective efforts could save many families from the pain of losing their beloved ones.
The Prime Minister said, “We have achieved many great things by standing together. We won independence in 1971, succeeded in the movement against autocracy in 1990 and in the mass uprising of 2024 through the united efforts of people from all walks of life.
“If we can accomplish those things together, why can’t we contribute collectively to solving the country’s other problems?” he asked.
The Prime Minister noted that around 2.5 crore students study at schools, colleges and universities across the country, while nearly 40 lakh members are involved in organisations such as the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), Scouts, Girl Guides and the Red Crescent.
He said students and members of these organisations are making efforts every Saturday for about a month to clean waste and rubbish across districts and upazilas as much as possible.
“A government succeeds when it works for the country together with its people,” he said, adding that his government wanted to resolve national problems through collective participation.
He called on everyone to join hands in the fight against dengue, saying concerted efforts could save many lives from the disease.
“Let us all make an effort together. If we work together, we will certainly be able to save many lives from the blight of dengue in the days ahead,” he said.
