Delhi Police detained former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee during a sit-in protest outside her residence in the Indian capital today, according to a report by Anandabazar Patrika.
Mamata was taken away in a prison van, the Bengali newspaper reported. Trinamool Congress leaders Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal, Derek O’Brien, Shamirul Islam and Saket Gokhale were also detained.
The protest was against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a revision of voter lists that critics say favours Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to Anandabazar Patrika, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh wrote on X that Mamata had been prevented from leaving her residence and that police were not allowing her to stage a protest.
“She has sat down outside her residence with MPs,” Ghosh wrote, according to the report.
Mamata and the other leaders were detained shortly afterwards, the newspaper reported
