Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today invited Wall Street firms to\u00a0invest in Bangladesh, saying the country is \u201copen for business\u201d and ready to serve as a strong\u00a0platform for investors seeking access to the wider regional market.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe welcome Wall Street firms to invest in Bangladesh. And we want Bangladesh to become a strong\u00a0platform, from which you can serve a much larger regional market,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur message is simple: Bangladesh is open for business,\u201d the Prime Minister said while addressing a breakfast meeting with business leaders and investors hosted by JPMorgan Chase at\u00a0its headquarters in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
Tarique Rahman said his government was determined to create \u201cconfidence, predictability and the right conditions to grow\u201d for investors, stressing that investment needs a conducive and\u00a0predictable business environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore entering politics, I started my career in business. I learned a simple lesson: investment needs confidence, predictability and the right conditions to grow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh, with a population of more than 180 million, has a young and\u00a0hardworking population, a growing market and a strategic location.<\/p>\n
He said Bangladesh was known globally as a major manufacturing and garments base, but the country now offered significant opportunities in energy, infrastructure, logistics, technology,\u00a0digital services, climate finance, manufacturing, agriculture and healthcare.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur ambition is to build a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2034 and position Bangladesh as a\u00a0globally connected manufacturing, investment and services hub,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister said the government was working to make Bangladesh \u201ceasier and more predictable\u201d for investors through deregulation, stronger investor protection, easier\u00a0regulations, improved tax and VAT administration, easier profit repatriation and better infrastructure.<\/p>\n
He also highlighted Bangladesh\u2019s efforts to deepen economic ties with major global economies,\u00a0saying the country had signed a Reciprocal Trade Agreement with the United States, reached new\u00a0economic arrangements with Japan and South Korea, initiated a new partnership with the European Union and strengthened economic ties with China.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are important steps in connecting Bangladesh more closely with the world\u2019s major\u00a0economies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Referring to JPMorgan\u2019s role in Bangladesh\u2019s inaugural sovereign bond, the Prime Minister described it as an important milestone that gave international investors a new reference point\u00a0for Bangladesh and helped connect the country\u2019s capital markets more closely with the global financial system.<\/p>\n
Tarique Rahman said investors wanted to know whether regulations were predictable, investments\u00a0were protected, capital could move efficiently and profits could be repatriated, describing these as \u201clegitimate questions\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur responsibility is to provide confidence through policy and, most importantly, through\u00a0implementation,\u201d he said, adding that Bangladesh was seeking long-term partnerships rather than\u00a0short-term transactions.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur government\u2019s objective is straightforward. More investment. More trade. More jobs. More technology. And a stronger economic partnership between Bangladesh and the United States,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister invited the investors to build long-term partnerships with Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
\u201cI invite you to invest with confidence and build for the long term. We are ready to work with you, listen to you and remove obstacles where we can. I hope we will see many of you soon in\u00a0Bangladesh,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The breakfast meeting was held as part of the Prime Minister\u2019s engagements in New York during his visit to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n
